Leadership Spotlight: Jojico Tanuwidjaja, Head of Talent and People at La Royale Group
"I’m inspired to be part of an organization that embraces the spirit of exploration"
With HR and consulting experiences at Mercer, EY, ByteDance, and Shopee, Jojico “Joji” Tanuwidjaja has spent more than a decade partnering with business leaders to design and implement people strategies that drive growth and impact. Her expertise spans organizational effectiveness, talent development, workforce planning, and change management - creating environments where people and businesses can thrive.
Joji has Malaysian-Indonesian roots, holds a Master’s in Management specializing in Human Resources from the University of Nottingham and is now based in Singapore. As Head of Talent and People at La Royale Group, she leads efforts to strengthen culture, nurture talent, and align people practices with the Group’s long-term ambitions.
In this edition of our Leadership Spotlight series, Joji reflects on her path in HR leadership and shares how she’s shaping La Royale Group’s culture and talent for the future.
How has your leadership style changed over the years?
I’ve learned that effective leadership isn’t about having all the answers - it’s about listening, empowering others, and creating space for people to use their unique strengths. I make it a priority to seek out different perspectives, because the best solutions often come through collaboration.
I also encourage team members to take ownership and grow through new opportunities, while making sure they feel supported and trusted. My aim is to lead in a way that drives results, but also helps people thrive and take pride in what they contribute.
When you stepped into this role, what was your first priority?
My first priority was to define what it means to be a high-performing organization at La Royale Group. For me, this is less about systems or processes and more about building a culture where performance and growth go hand-in-hand.
I’m focused on revamping our performance management framework to set clear expectations while emphasizing development for every individual. Over time, this will link to talent development, career pathways, and succession planning - ensuring every individual can see a future here as we build the leaders and culture that will carry us forward.
If you could offer one piece of advice to future leaders, what would it be?
Embrace a growth mindset and don’t be afraid to fail - in fact, have the courage to fail and then learn quickly as every setback is an opportunity to grow stronger. At the same time, know your strengths and keep sharpening them, because true leadership comes from leaning into what makes you unique.
Most importantly, find passion in what you do. When your work aligns with your purpose, it stops feeling like “work” and becomes something that energizes and inspires both you and those around you.
What’s a book or podcast that’s shaped your thinking recently, and why?
Nine Lies About Work by Marcus Buckingham and Ashley Goodall resonated deeply with me, as it challenges many of the “truths” we’ve been taught about work and leadership. One key takeaway is the importance of focusing on individual strengths rather than trying to fix weaknesses. It reinforced my belief that people perform at their best when encouraged to do more of what they’re naturally good at.
The book also highlights that culture is defined by everyday team experiences. This has influenced how I approach the employee experience, to create an environment where strengths are celebrated, teams feel authentic, and people can thrive.
Looking ahead, what excites you most about the future of La Royale Group?
La Royale Group’s bold vision to venture into uncharted areas. It takes courage and imagination to push beyond the familiar, and I’m inspired to be part of an organization that embraces that spirit of exploration.
I’m equally energized by the chance to work alongside such talented colleagues, each bringing deep expertise in their fields. Together, our vision and our people give me confidence that we can achieve something truly extraordinary.
